Conan Exiles · Troubleshooting

Conan Exiles server not working?
Start here.

Most Conan problems are one of three things: a Funcom patch that left the server a build behind its players, a mod built for the old engine that installs and does nothing, or a stop that looks hung because Conan is writing its whole world. None of them means the server is broken.

conan — the three checks
# what fixes most Conan Exiles problems
1 Nobody can join after a Conan patch
→ Update now (Mods tab if modded)
2 Mod installed, nothing changed
→ Restart; use the [Enhanced] item
3 Stuck on “Stopping…”
→ Normal: ~1.5 min world write
Each one is written out below, with the panel tab you fix it on.
🔧

My friends can’t join, or the server isn’t in the browser

Three settings refuse people on purpose: Whitelist Only lets in only whitelisted ids, Max Allowed Ping kicks anyone above it, and the region switches under Access & Regions block players by where they connect from. Rule those out before you blame the network.
1

Wait for Running

A Conan stop alone takes about a minute and a half, so a server you just saved settings on is still on its way back. Join when the panel says Running, not before.

2

Join by Direct Connect

Use the address and port on your server card in the game’s Direct Connect. A new server takes a while to work its way into the in-game browser; Direct Connect doesn’t wait for that.

3

Check the password

Settings → Identity & Access → Server Password. Blank is an open server. If you set one, every player needs it.

4

Running mods? Match them

Every player needs the same mods in the same order. Conan checks the list at the door and turns away a client that doesn’t match, and it reports that as a connection failure, not a mod problem.

5

Right after a Conan patch?

A client newer than the server can’t join at all. See nobody can join after a patch.

Why: The in-game browser is fed by the server’s Steam query port, a different port from the one players connect on, so a server can be up and joinable before it lists.

🔧

Conan patched and now nobody can join

Holding a modded server on the old build is not the cautious choice on Conan. Steam updates your players’ game for them, and a server behind its clients locks every one of them out.
1

Unmodded: press Update

When a newer build reaches us, a banner at the top of the panel says A newer Conan Exiles build is ready, and the build line at the top of Settings carries Update now. We copy your world first, then restart onto the new build.

2

Modded: use the Mods tab

Turning mods on pins the game build so a patch can’t land under your mods — which means a modded server doesn’t move on its own and gets no banner. Mods tab → Update now on the pinned-build card moves it. The world is snapshotted before the build changes.

3

Then read the Load order

A Conan patch can make older mods unloadable — 2.2.0 forced every mod to be recooked. A mod the new build refuses shows Needs a mod update · skipped: we leave it out so the server starts and the rest of your list still loads. When its author republishes, install the same Workshop ID again; the file is retried as soon as it changes.

4

Funcom ahead of us? That one is ours

If the build line says Conan has released a build we haven’t published yet, there’s no button on your side for it. It’s on us.

5

Optional: stay current automatically

Keep this server on the newest game build automatically on the Mods tab updates and restarts the server the moment you tick it, then takes each new build on the nightly sweep. The trade: a mod a patch broke usually just stops working on a server that looks healthy. Check the mod count after each update.

Why: Conan enforces client/server lockstep. And a listed mod that the new build refuses doesn’t fail politely: the server exits and restarts in a loop, which is why we pull it from the list instead of handing it over.

🔧

I installed a mod and nothing changed

Don’t hand-edit modlist.txt. We rebuild it from the folder and your order at every start, and we leave out any file that isn’t a Conan mod, because a non-mod pak named in that list sends the server into a restart loop. Install a mod file checks a .pak or .zip will load before it goes in, and says why if it won’t.
1

Restart once more

The first boot after an install mounts nothing: Conan reads its mod list early in the boot, before a fresh install lands. Restart after every install, then test.

2

Read the file’s state

Mods tab → Load order labels every file: Loads, Too old — won’t load, Needs a mod update · skipped, Not a mod · skipped or Couldn’t check · skipped. Anything other than Loads is your answer.

3

Too old means Legacy

A mod built before the Enhanced (UE5) rebuild installs fine and the game ignores it without one log line. Plenty of mods have two Workshop items; install the one tagged [Enhanced].

4

Mods switched on?

Mods off empties the mods folder from the game’s point of view; your files stay put. Turn mods on on the Mods tab — the Workshop box needs it on too — then restart.

5

Same mods, same order, every player

Load order decides whose changes win (later in the list wins). Set it with the arrows, then give your players that exact list in that order.

Why: Conan’s loader reads only what modlist.txt names, and an Enhanced mod is a container it unpacks at boot — so nothing about a mod changes until the server starts again.

🔧

I changed a setting and it reverted, or my ini edit vanished

Spelling matters and a typo fails silently — Conan ignores a key it doesn’t know and says nothing. Guides still list keys Enhanced doesn’t have (the whole Purge family, PVPBlitzServer, ThrallWakeupTime), and Funcom’s own spelling is ItemConvertionMultiplier, typo included.
1

Change it on the Settings tab

Saving restarts the server, and the stop takes about a minute and a half. We write every panel-managed key fresh at each start, so a value hand-edited into ServerSettings.ini is replaced by the panel’s at the next boot.

2

Hand edits only with the server stopped

Conan rewrites all four of its ini files when it shuts down, so an edit made while it runs is thrown away. A key the panel doesn’t show is kept: stop the server, add it in Files, start.

3

In-game changes last one session

A change from the in-game admin menu, or the Console’s Change a live setting, is gone at the next restart. Put it in Settings if it should stick.

4

Ask the game what it’s running

Console → Read a live setting, e.g. getsetting PVPEnabled. That’s the game answering with the value it is actually using, not what a file says.

5

Player limit looks wrong?

Conan takes its player cap from the launch line, not the ini files, so an ini can say one number while the server runs another. The panel’s Max Players field is the one that counts: set it there, and the “of N” on the Players tab shows the cap the server is really running.

Why: The panel writes your settings at every start and Conan writes its own copy at every stop. The panel’s value wins each boot; anything the panel doesn’t manage is merged, not dropped.

🔧

It’s been on “Stopping…” for over a minute. Is it stuck, and did my world save?

1

Let it finish

Conan writes its whole world database when it stops — measured at about a minute and a half, longer on a big server — and the panel shows Stopping… the whole time. That stop is the save.

2

Use the panel’s Stop and Restart

The Console’s Ask the game to exit and Ask the game to restart go around that wait, and the panel won’t know they’re coming. The panel’s buttons wait for the clean save.

3

No Save button, on purpose

Conan has no save command for us to send, so the Console offers no Save world now for it. Stopping is how a Conan world gets written on demand.

4

Where it lives, how to get it back

The world is one SQLite file, game_0.db (Files: “World save (SQLite)”). Worlds & backups holds last night’s copy, two taken before game updates and three slots you fill — six restore points. Take one before you touch mods.

5

Bringing a world in

Stop the server, upload your Saved folder through Files, start it. No setting picks the save: the server always opens game_0.db.

Why: Conan saves when it gets the right shutdown signal and ignores the default one. We send the right one and give it two minutes; killed at ten seconds, as a plain container stop would, it loses the end of the session.

🔧

How do I make myself admin in game?

The full in-game list is on our Conan admin commands page.
1

Set an admin password

Settings → Identity & Access → Admin Password. Blank means nobody can be admin. Make it long and random: it grants teleport, spawning and overriding other players. Saving restarts the server.

2

Claim it in game

Esc → Settings → Server Settings → Make Me Admin, and enter the password.

3

Or type it

MakeMeAdmin yourpassword. Conan’s typed commands take no leading slash.

4

Keep it apart from the RCON password

The RCON password sits next to it and is the more dangerous of the two — Conan’s RCON includes a raw sql command. Don’t reuse one for the other.

🔧

Kick and Ban don’t work, or Unban says the player “was not banned”

Conan bans are not permanent. Lifting one works every time with the right id — why unbanplayer says “was not banned”.
1

Is RCON on?

Kick, Ban, Announce and the Console’s commands all go over RCON. Every server starts with it on and a password we generate. If Settings → Identity & Access → Enable RCON was switched off, turn it back on and save; the server restarts to apply it.

2

Kick and ban from the Players tab

Use the buttons on the player’s row. Conan only finds players who are online: kicking someone who already left answers “No player with user id”.

3

Lift bans from the ban list

Use Lift on the ban list, never the id off the player row. Conan shows a Funcom id on the roster and stores a 17-digit SteamID64 on the ban list. Unban with the Funcom id and it answers “Failed to ban player … was not banned” — and the ban stays.

4

An empty list is a best guess

With nobody banned, Conan sends the same one-line reply it sends when the command didn’t run, so the panel says Nobody is banned — most likely. If you know someone is banned and see that, lift them by id.

Why: The roster id and the ban-list id are two different ids for the same person, and Funcom’s error says “ban” on an unban, so it doesn’t even read as the right failure.

🔧

The server is lagging. Do I need more RAM?

What we haven’t measured: ten people and a modlist on one server. We won’t round a guess into a number for you.
1

Read Memory used

Your server card shows it. Conan: Enhanced idles at about 8.6 GB with nobody connected — we measured it at the 12 GB cap we sell it on, with about 3 GB spare and zero memory-pressure events.

2

Players barely move it

We measured 8.40 GB empty and 8.36 GB with a player on. The UE5 engine sets the floor, not the crew.

3

Near the ceiling? Size up

16 GB for a long-running world, a real Workshop modlist or a proper population; 24 GB for a server that only grows. Moving up a plan is a click and never touches your world.

4

Read the server’s own numbers

Every 60 seconds Conan writes a Status report line to its log — uptime, memory, CPU, players, FPS — and the Console shows that log.

5

Tell us what changed last

If memory is fine and it still drags, send a ticket with what changed most recently. It’s nearly always that.

Why: 8 GB stopped running Conan when Enhanced landed: admins on Funcom’s forum report the server being killed for memory there, where the old version ran fine.

💬

None of these, or still stuck?

1

Check the problems every game shares

Connections, settings that will not take, where your world is, lag: the answers that hold on every game are on the support page.

2

Write to us

The form arrives with Conan Exiles already set; tell us what you tried and it saves a round trip. Pressing Need help? in your panel does the same and attaches your server, so there is nothing to look up.
