Enshrouded server not working?
Start here.
Enshrouded has no server password: the password a player types picks their role. So most first-day trouble is a friend typing the wrong one, or none. The rest is a patch reaching your players before it reaches the server.
# what fixes most Enshrouded problems 1 Asks for a password I never set → Give friends the Friend password 2 Everyone rejected after a patch → Update the server’s game build 3 Not in the server browser → Wait a few minutes, or add it by IP
It asks for a password I never set. Which one do my friends use?
The password picks the role
Enshrouded has four separate roles — Admin, Friend, Guest and Visitor — each with its own password, and no single top-level server password. Whichever password a player types decides their role.
Give friends the Friend password
Settings → Identity & Access: every new server gets a generated Admin password and Friend password, both labelled. Hand out the Friend one. Keep Admin to yourself — whoever types it gets kick, ban and full build rights.
Blank doesn’t mean open
A role with a blank password is left out of the server’s config, so nobody can join as it, and once every role has a password a join with no password is refused outright. For a genuinely open server, turn on Open build mode: anyone joins with no password and can build, but can’t kick or ban.
Role switches need a password first
A role’s permission switches and its reserved slots do nothing until that role has a password.
Server full and you’re locked out?
Set Admin: reserved slots to 1 or more. It holds a slot for whoever joins with the Admin password.
Why: Enshrouded dropped its server-wide password in Update 2. Leave every role blank and the game writes its own roles with random passwords nobody knows, which locks the server rather than opening it.
Everyone gets rejected after an Enshrouded patch
Server and players must match
After a patch, Enshrouded refuses a client on a different build. Steam updates your players on its own; the server doesn’t update itself.
Update from Settings
The game-build line at the top of Settings says when a newer build is ready on the node. Update now copies the world first, then restarts onto it.
Modded? Update from Mods
Turning mods on pins the game build so a patch can’t land under them. The pin card on Mods has its own Update now, or tick Keep this server on the newest game build automatically.
Then check Shroudtopia
Shroudtopia targets one game build. When the build moves, its offset-based features can stop applying without crashing anything: a Console line like class NoResourceCostAddress not found is one feature missing its target, not a broken server.
My server doesn’t show up in the in-game server browser
Give it a few minutes
A fresh server can take several minutes to appear in the list. Search for it by name.
Add it to Steam favourites
Steam → View → Game Servers → Favorites → add the address from your server card, port included. That’s instant. Enshrouded uses one UDP port for both the game and the server query, so there’s no second port to find.
Search the right name
The name in the list is Server name on Settings → Identity & Access. Change it there, then Apply & restart.
I changed a setting and nothing changed in game
Apply & restart
Enshrouded reads its config only when it starts. Apply & restart on Settings writes it and restarts the server.
Custom is how your own values run
On a named preset — Relaxed, Default, Hard, Survival — the game ignores the whole gameplay block. Picking a preset in the panel fills in that preset’s own values; change any one and it becomes Custom with the rest kept, so Hard plus one change runs Hard plus that change.
Change it on Settings, not in the file
The panel rewrites enshrouded_server.json from your Settings on every start, and the game itself deletes any key it doesn’t recognise. A hand edit to a key the panel manages is gone at the next start.
The in-game menu is read-only
On a dedicated server Enshrouded makes its own settings menu read-only and tells players to use the provider’s interface. This is that interface.
Mods are installed but nothing changed
class NoResourceCostAddress not found and quietly does nothing while the server stays up. That’s the mod and the game build disagreeing. How mods work here.Check the Console at boot
Enshrouded mods load through Shroudtopia, which we install for you when you turn mods on. It prints its own line at boot (Running on server) and lists what it registered; the Mods tab shows a ✓ off that line.
No line? Reinstall the loader
If that line isn’t there, reinstall the loader from the Mods tab and restart.
Mod files go in the mods folder
There’s no one-click shelf for Enshrouded — Nexus gates its downloads. Drop the mod’s files into enshrouded/mods/ in Files and restart. Each mod’s on/off switch and options live in enshrouded/shroudtopia.json.
Some mods need player files too
Server-side mods apply to everyone with no install. Others also need files on each player’s PC — the mod’s own page says which.
How do I kick or ban someone — and lift a ban?
From inside the game
Join with the Admin password, open the Social tab, pick the player, then kick or ban. That’s the only route: Enshrouded gives a host no command channel to send one through.
Why there’s no Ban button here
Enshrouded keys its ban list by a scrambled form of the Steam id, made on purpose so the file can’t identify anyone. We only ever see the plain id and the two don’t convert, so a Ban box here would have nothing true to put in it.
Lift a ban from the file, server stopped
Stop the server. In Files, open enshrouded/enshrouded_server.json and delete the player’s entry under bannedAccounts — or set it to [] to lift every ban, which the game doesn’t bring back — then start it. Players can also be removed from the list in the Social tab.
Bans survive settings changes
Applying settings rewrites that file, and we carry your ban list across every rewrite.
Did my world save? How do I roll it back?
The stop is the save
Enshrouded has no save command. Every Stop, restart and settings apply sends the game a real Ctrl+C, and it writes its world and exits cleanly. That’s why there’s no Save world now button on this game.
Backups don’t ask for a save first
Back up now copies what the game last wrote. For a copy of this exact moment, Stop the server, then back up.
Roll back
Worlds & backups: the nightly restore points, the copy taken before an update, and your own saved copies, each with Restore. Download keeps one for good.
Your world is the savegame folder
It’s enshrouded/savegame/ in Files. To bring one in, stop the server, upload your savegame folder there, and start it. Never copy a save out from under a running server.
None of these, or still stuck?
Check the problems every game shares
Connections, settings that will not take, where your world is, lag: the answers that hold on every game are on the support page.
Write to us
The form arrives with Enshrouded already set; tell us what you tried and it saves a round trip. Pressing Need help? in your panel does the same and attaches your server, so there is nothing to look up.
